Required GPA Calculator
The GPA you must average in remaining credits to reach a target.
Formula
Required GPA = (target × total credits − current GPA × completed credits) ÷ remaining credits
Compute the quality points your target demands across all credits, subtract the points you’ve already banked, then divide by what’s left to earn.
Example calculation
Target 3.50 × 90 total cr = 315.0 pts needed
Current 3.10 × 60 cr = 186.0 pts banked
129.0 points ÷ 30 remaining credits
= 4.30 required average
Assumptions
- Uses a 4.0 maximum scale.
- Target and current GPA are treated as exact values.
- All remaining credits are assumed to be GPA-counted credits.
- The result is impossible if the required average exceeds the scale maximum — shown clearly.
Frequently asked questions
What if the required GPA is above 4.0?
The calculator flags it as not reachable on a 4.0 scale — you’d need to adjust your target or timeline.
Can I use this for a single semester target?
Yes — set remaining credits to this semester’s load to see the term GPA you need.
What does ‘already met’ mean?
Your banked points already satisfy the target for the total credits — you could average 0.0 and still finish above it.
