Final Grade Calculator
Find the score you need on the final exam to hit your target grade.
Formula
Needed % = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight
Your current grade covers 1 − final weight of the course; the final covers the rest. Solve for the final score that brings the weighted sum to your target.
Example calculation
Current 82% (60% of course) = 49.2 pts banked
Target 90% − 49.2 = 40.8 needed
40.8 ÷ 40% final weight
= 102% on the final — not reachable
Assumptions
- Current grade reflects only non-final work, as a percentage.
- Final exam weight is the percentage of the course grade it controls.
- Weights are assumed to sum correctly with your syllabus.
- Scores above 100% are flagged as not possible.
Frequently asked questions
My target requires more than 100% — what now?
The exam alone can’t get you there. Check for extra credit, or lower the target to the next grade band.
How do I find my final exam weight?
It’s in your course syllabus — typically 20–40% of the final grade.
Can the answer be negative?
Yes — it means you’ve already locked the target; any score keeps it.
